MaterialsChemistryMaterialsChemistryMaterialsChemistryMaterialsChemistryTheHayashigroup,incollaborationwithTeshimaandZettsugroups,hasresearchedfabricationoffunctionalinorganiccrystalsbyutilizingvarioustechniquesincludingfluxgrowthmethod,andsolvothermalandammnothermalmethods.Especially,ourresearchfocusesonrecoveryofusefulresourcesandremovaloftoxicionsfromaqueoussolutionsusinginorganicionexchangers.Wearealwaysinterestedinfundamentalissuesandproblemsinthefieldsofenergyandenvironmentalscience.Celluloseisproducedbysomekindsofbacteriaaswellasplants.Itiscalledasbacterialcelluloseormicrobialcellulose,andisusedforvariousindustrialpurposes.Inourlaboratory,wefocusonthetheproteincomplexparticipatingincellulosefunctionofbiosynthesis,whichbehaveslikeafiberspinningmachine.Itistoosmallthisproteincomplexbymicroscope.ThuswearetryingtostudyitsstructurebyX-raycrystallographicanalysisattheatomiclevel.toobservethestructureofOurtargetistodevelopfunctionalmaterialsrangingfromnanosheetstosinglecrystalsandtoapplytoionsieves,electrodes,andquantumcomputerdevices.Researchissuesareselectiveuptakeoflithiumionfromlakeandseawater,removalofradioactiveandtoxicmetalionsfromwastes,andevaluationofnuclearspinpropertyof19F-dopedapatite.Wemakeainternationalteamtopursuesuchfieldsofstudy.Ourteamisequippedwithvariouscharacterizationsinstruments(seerightfigure),andourgroupmemberswillhaveexcellentopportunitiesformasteringnewexperimentalskills.Graduateswillplayanactiveroleasresearchers/engineersinvariousfieldsrelevanttoenvironmentalpurification,energyconversion,andelectronics.Thewidthofcellulosefibrilextrudedfromasingleproteincomplexisabout1.5nm.thesecellulosefibersarebundledtoformcellulosefibers(10-100nm)basedon?thearrayofproteincomplexonthecellsurfaceandthemovementofbacterium.Ifthearrayofproteincomplexcanbecontrolled,itmightbepossibletomakeacellulosenanofiberwithavarietyofthicknessandlength.MoststudentsstayatShinshuUniversityfortheirgraduatestudies.Othersfindjobsinmanufacturingcompaniesinvariousfieldssuchaschemistry,electronics,andfood.Innature,(Top) Crystal structures of inorganic ion exchangers with 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional nanostructures.
