Outlook for research 53応用生物科学科Department of Applied BiologyOutlookforstudentsaftergraduationHow can spider and silkworm spin such a tough silk?Silkisusedasastructuralmaterialinnaturesuchasalifelineofspiderandashellofsilkworm.Thethicknessofspidersilkisapproximatelyonetenthofhuman’shair.Thespidersilkwith3‐mmthicknesscansupportamanwith60kg.Silkseemsveryattractivewhenusedasstructuralmaterial,however,itisdifficulttosynthesizeanartificialsilkthathasbothstrengthandextensibilitylikenativesilk.Spidersandsilkwormsareknowntopossesssophisticatedspinningmechanism.Iwouldliketosharemysteriesinthenaturalspinningsystemsinspidersandsilkwormsandtakeadvantageofthesystemtosynthesizeartificialsilkforindustrialapplications.Iwouldliketosharetheexcitementoftacklingthescienceofnature,fromthestudyofspiderandsilkwormsilk.Youwillmakehypothesisandperformexperimentstoproofthehypothesis.Hopefully,youwillexertyourselfinsocietyfromyourresearchexperimentatShinshuUniversity.AssistantProfessorKenjiroYazawaAssistantProfessorYazawagothisph.DatTokyoTech.andcametohiscurrentpositionafterworkingasapostdoctoralresearcheratYamagatauniversityandRIKENinJapan.Hespecializesmolecularbiologyandpolymerscience.Hisfinalaimistorevealthemechanismofspinningsystemofspidersandsilkworms.Spidersarefixedbetweenspongeswiththeirlegsinsidethespongestoextracttheirsilks.Wefeelthatthesilkisshinyandtough.Spiderstransformsilksolutionsintofibersintheirglands.Man‐madefibersneedtobeprocessedathightemperature,whilespidersandsilkwormssynthesizetheirsilkinamildcondition.Wecansynthesizetheartificialsilkbymimickingthenaturalspinningsystemandcontributetousesilkasastructuralmaterialinourdailylife.
