49応用生物科学科Department of Applied BiologyDepartment of Applied BiologyサイズW7.5cm×H4.35cm配置位置横11cm、縦7.8cmOutlook for research Designing and developing useful proteins by studying the structure and function of proteins応用生物科学科Department of Applied BiologyOutlookforstudentsaftergraduationDepartment of Applied BiologyWearecarryingoutresearchtogainadeeperunderstandingofthestructureandfunctionofproteinsandtodesign,develop,andapplyusefulartificialandengineeredproteins.Inthefieldsofproteindesignandengineering,ourlabusescuttingedgetechnologytosee,analyze,create,andapplyusefulproteins.Ourgoalistoapplyproteinsinvariousfields,forexampleinbiotechnologyandpharmaceuticaldevelopment,inordertodevelopeco‐friendlyhighlyfunctionalnanomaterials,greenchemistrycatalysts,high‐sensitivitybiosensors,andeffectivevaccines.Intheseways,wehopetocontributetheachievementofasustainablesociety.Graduatesareemployedinnumerousfields,includingatfood,pharmaceutical,optics,chemical,andbiochemicalcompanies.AssociateProfessorRyoichiAraiAssociateProfessorAraijoinedShinshuUniversityin2007afterworkingasaresearcheratRIKENandPrincetonUniversityintheU.S.Hisareasofresearcharestructuralbiologytoanalyzethethree‐dimensionalstructureandfunctionofproteins,andproteinengineeringtodevelopusefulproteinsthroughtheirmodificationanddesign.Anexperimentintheresearchlab(upperleft),productionofusefulproteinswithmicroorganisms(upperright),proteincrystalswhichshinelikeapreciousstone(lowerleft),andanX‐raydiffractionexperimentatasynchrotronradiationfacility(lowerright)Self‐assemblingnanoarchitecturesarecreatedfromaproteinnano‐buildingblockbyfusingadimericdenovoproteinWA20andatrimericfoldondomainfromT4phage.(Kobayashi,N.etal.,J.Am.Chem.Soc.,137,11285‐11293,2015)Outlook for research Studying the capabilities and survival strategies of insects and leveraging them in daily life応用生物科学科Department of Applied BiologyOutlookforstudentsaftergraduationInsectsarethemostprosperousanimalsontheearth.Theyemployartfulsurvivalstrategiestoadapttotheenvironment,andeachspecieshasdevelopeduniquefeatures.Iinvestigateattractiveandusefulcapabilitiesofinsectsinordertoleveragethemtobenefitourdailylivesinthefuture.Insectsarenotcompletelydifferentfromus,afactthatisclearevenifweonlyconsidertheirmorphology.Researchintothespecialfeaturesofinsectsprovidesuswithimportantcluestounderstandingourselvesashumans.Thepicturetotherightshowsagreenlarva.Inthislarva,dye‐bindingproteinsarestoredingranulesinepidermalcells.Mylabisresearchingthemechanismbywhichthesegranulesareformed.Bydiscoveringhowthatoccurs,wehopetoalsodiscoveramechanismbywhichsecretoryproteinscanbemaintainedwithincells.Graduates are active as researchers at food and pharmaceutical manufacturers and as public officials.AssociateProfessorKojiShiraiAssociateProfessorShiraitookhiscurrentpositionafterworkingasaCOEspecialresearcherattheNationalInstituteofSericulturalandEntomologicalScienceoftheMinistryofAgriculture,Forestry,andFisheriesandasanassistantprofessoratShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofspecializationarebiologicalchemistryandmolecularcellbiologyforutilizinginsectsandinsectcells.Thegreenlarvaofthesweetpotatohornworm,Agriusconvolvuli,alargelepidopteraninsectfoundthroughoutJapan.Adye‐bindingproteinextractedfromthedermalcellofaninsect.Theproteincontainscluesaboutproteinsecretioncontrol.
