応用生物科学科Researching human health and protection of the freshwater environment and analyzing water environment changes using aquatic insects as biological indicatorsUsing micromanipulation to study the mechanism of fertilization and preserve, regenerate, and utilize genetic resources47OutlookforstudentsaftergraduationOutlookforstudentsaftergraduationWeareresearchingtherelationshipbetweenthebenthonicfaunaofthefreshwaterenvironment(i.e.,rivers,lakes,andmarshes)andwaterqualities(trophicstatus).Weusechangesinthecomposition,densitiesandbiomassofvariousspecies,andtheirroleintheaquaticecosystemtolearnandmonitorofthechangestothefreshwaterenvironment.Wecapturethesignalsgivenbyaquaticorganismstolearnaboutthecurrentwaterenvironmentandpredictfuturetrends.Coexistingwithnatureisagreatchallenge.Webelieveitisimportanttofindwaystodothisbybecominghighlyknowledgeableaboutnatureandlivingthings.Whynotbecomeanenvironmentalbiologist?Ourgraduatesareactiveasresearchersatresearchfacilitiesforpharmaceuticalcompanies,localpublicorganizations,pestcontrolcompanies,andwaterqualityinspectioncompanies,etc.ProfessorKimioHirabayashiProfessorHirabayashitookhiscurrentpositionin2007afterworkingasanassociateprofessorattheYamanashiWomen'sJuniorCollege,andasanassociateprofessorattheShinshuUniversity.HehasservedontheacademicstaffattheUniversityCollegeofLondonintheUKandontheassociateprofessorattheUniversityofMelbourneinAustralia.ResearchkeywordsincludeAppliedEcology,FreshwaterBiology,SanitaryZoology,andEnvironmentalHygiene.CarryingoutasurveyofaquaticinsectsintheAzusaRiver,theKamikochiSpecialProtectedArea,withpermissionfromtheMinistryoftheEnvironment.(Background:Mt.Yakedake)Chironomidlarvaeusedasanindicatorofaquaticenvironments.Carryingoutasurveyofbenthicfaunabydammingaportionofariver,aspartofajointprojectwiththePublicWorksResearchInstituteoftheMinistryofLand,Infrastructure,TransportandTourism.Outlook for research Outlook for research Inmylabwestudyphysiologicalaspectsofearlyeventsduringfertilizationinmammalsaswellastechnicalinnovationsinvolvingthepreservationandutilizationofgeneticresources.MystudentsandIhavepublishedmorethan100researchpaperssofardescribingourresearchintohaploidgametes(spermatozoaandoocytes)anddiploidembryosfromvariousmammalianspecies,includingmice,rats,rabbits,cats,horses,buffalo,cattle,whales,andhumans.Advancedreproductivetechnologiessuchasintracytoplasmicsperminjectionandsomaticcellnucleartransplantationmadeitpossibletobringthemammothbacktolife.Furthermore,wehaverecentlyestablishedpluripotentstemcelllinesinlaboratoryrats.IftheseESoriPScellscouldbedifferentiatedintofunctionalgametes,theprocesswouldbetheultimatetreatmentforinfertility.Graduatesareemployedbypharmaceuticalandfood‐relatedcompaniesaswellasnationalandlocalorganizations(aspublicofficials).Inwhathasbecomearecenttrend,someskilledgraduatesworkathumaninfertilityclinicsaspotentialembryologists.ProfessorShinichiHochiProfessorHochitookhiscurrentpositionin2008afterworkingasaresearcher(1986to1992)atSnowBrandMilkProductsCo.Ltd.,asavisitingassistantprofessor(1992to1995)andvisitingassociateprofessor(1995to1996)atObihiroUniversityofAgricultureandVeterinaryMedicine,andasanassistantprofessor(1996to1999)andassociateprofessor(1999to2008)intheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Heisengagedinresearchonreproductivephysiology,cryobiology,anddevelopmentalengineeringinsmallexperimentalrodents,largedomesticanimals,andhumans.Intracytoplasmicinjectionoffishhook‐shapedratspermheadswasdifficulttoachieve,butseveralclueshelpedusexpanditsapplicationtofreeze‐driedspermatozoa.Micromanipulationenablesustohandlenotonlyoocyteswithdiametersof100to120μm,butalsomuchsmallerspermcells.AmicrotubulenetworkcanbeassembledfromcentrosomeofspermatozoonimmediatelyafterfertilizationDepartment of Applied BiologyDepartment of Applied Biology
