Mixing familiar materials to make coatingsfor high‐efficiency solar cellsOutlookforresearchOutlook for students after graduationDepartment of Chemistry and MaterialsManyuniversitiesandcompaniesthroughouttheworldarepursuingresearchanddevelopmentprogramswiththegoalofincreasingtheefficiencyofsolarcellsthatcanbecreatedbycoatingsurfaceswithamixtureoftitaniumoxide(usedinsunblockcreams),iodine(usedasadisinfectant),andpigments(suchasfromblueberries).Iamworkingtodevelophighlyefficientsolarcellsandexplainthemechanismofelectrontransfer.Dye‐sensitizedsolarcellsandorganic‐filmsolarcellsareexpectedtoserveaslow‐cost,next‐generationsolarcell.Further,byexplainingthemechanismofelectrontransfer,Ibelieveitwillbepossibletodesignhigh‐performancedevicesusinglow‐costmaterials.Graduates are employed by material, device, and electrical manufacturers.ProfessorShogoMoriProfessorMoritookhiscurrentpositionin2018afterworkingatNokiaJapanandasanassistantprofessorandthenanassociateprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofresearchincludedye‐sensitizedandorganicfilmsolarcellsandsemiconductorandsurfaceelectrontransfer.A selection of pigment solution and dye‐sensitized solar cells made from them. These solutions make it possible to design effective solar cells.It is possible to make solar cells without complex equipment.Department of Chemistry and MaterialsDevelopmentofsimplemethodsforcreatingregularsurfacetopography200 µm200 µmIamengagedindevelopingtechnologytocreateregularsurfacetopographyusingsimplemethods.Forexample,treatingthesurfaceofasiliconerubbersheetwithamixtureofconc.H2SO4andconc.HNO3createsregularwrinklesonit(Fig.1).Asanotherexample,thingoldfilmsspontaneouslywrinkletoformaninterdigitatedarraypatternusingsputteringmethodsofthinfilmformationonasiliconerubbersurface(Fig.2).Studiesonapplicationsofsurfacetopographiesareprogressingcontinuously.Forexample,Iamattemptingtoconstructregulararraysofcrystallineneedlesusingsurfacewrinklesonsiliconerubber.Consideringtheavailabilityofseveralinterestingdomains,Ibelievethatgraduatestudentswillchoosetheirjobsfreely,irrespectiveoftheirgraduateresearchdomain.ProfessorMasashiWatanabeProfessorWatanabeiscurrentlyinterestedinsurfacepropertiesofpolymersandarrangementofsmallobjects,suchascrystallineneedles.Outlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationFig. 1. Scanning electron microscopy image of wrinkles with a stripe pattern.Fig. 2. Light microscope image of wrinkles with an interdigitated array pattern.36
