Using a computer to examine the properties of substances in a “dry lab,” therebyperforming chemistry without experimentationDeveloping new luminescent materials and energy‐storing materials using nanocarbon34Department of Chemistry and MaterialsDepartment of Chemistry and MaterialsOutlookforresearchOutlook for students after graduationOutlookforresearchOutlook for students after graduationIamexaminingnumerousproperties,includingopticalproperties,withoutactuallycarryingoutexperimentsbyperformingmolecularcomputationbasedonquantumchemistry.Thisapproachmakesitpossibletounderstandthetruenatureofthosepropertiesandtodiscovertherootsofthepropertiesofthesubstancesonewishestoinvestigate.Currently,mylabisfocusingitsresearchprimarilyoncarbonsubstancessuchasfullerenes.Currently,organicsynthesisusingmolecularcomputationtopredictreactionpathwayshasbeenaddressedinthescientificliterature.Inthisway,researchersexpectthatbycalculatinganefficientreactioninadvance,itwillbepossibletocarryoutexperimentswithoutwastingtestreagentsortime.Whilegraduatespursuenumerouscareerpaths,manyaimtobecomesystemengineers,teachers,orpublicofficials.ProfessorYasushiNomuraProfessorNomuratookhiscurrentpositionin2020afterworkingintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversityasanassistantprofessorandanassociateprofessor.Hisareaoffocusistheoreticalchemistrybasedonquantumchemistry.Recently,hehasbeenresearchingtheelectronicpropertiesofcarbonmaterialssuchasfullerenes,theglowofcertainorganicmolecules,andtheirquenchingprocess.One subject my lab is investigating is carbon nanotubes.Thereareabundantelectronsinthelargeredandblueareasofthismolecularorbitalmodelrelatedtoelectrondistributionforacertainfullerene.Iamcarryingoutresearchtosynthesizefluorescentnanocarbonandtousenanocarbon(carbonnanotubes,graphene,carbonnano‐horns,etc.)inenergy‐storagedevices(primaryandsecondarylithiumbatteriesandsupercapacitors).Myresearchcoversawiderangeoftopics,fromfundamentalstoapplications.Potentialapplicationsforthisresearcharegrowinginnumberandincludedrivepowersourcesforelectricvehicles,next‐generationbio‐imagingmaterials,andcleaninggasesforsemiconductorsthatareenvironmentallyfriendlyandenergy‐efficient.Graduatesseekemploymentatchemicalcompanies,particularlycompaniesinvolvedincarbonmaterials,electrochemicals,andfluorinechemistry,orasteachersorpublicofficials.ProfessorYoshiyukiHattoriProfessorHattoritookhiscurrentpositionafterworkingasaresearcherinvolvedincollaborationamongindustry,academia,andgovernmentintheChibaUniversityFacultyofScience,asaseniorassistantprofessor,andasanassociateprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Heiscurrentlyengagedinbasicresearchincarbonscienceandinorganicfluorinechemistry,includingresearchontheapplicationsofnanocarbonasanelectrodematerialandasanadsorptionmaterial.My lab succeeded in synthesizing fluorescent nanocarbon, whose applications include use in imaging materials.We also succeeded in synthesizing porous carbon nano‐sheets, whose potential uses include capacitors and electrodes in high‐output secondary lithium batteries.
