AstheonlyfacilityofitskinddedicatedtoappliedfibermechanicsresearchinJapan,mylabiscurrentlyengagedinresearchanddevelopmentofoptimalhigh‐relative‐strengthandmulti‐functionfiberstructuresaswellasfiber‐reinforcedplasticsandfiber‐reinforcedthermoplastics(FRPsandFRTPs).Wehavebeensuccessfullyindevelopingfiber‐reinforcedplasticsthatexhibithighrelativestrengthandstrongerosionresistance,aswellaslow‐costFRPrecyclingmethodscharacterizedbyahighrecoveryrate.GraduatesareprimarilyemployedbyaircraftandautomobilemanufacturersinJapanandinternationally.ProfessorLiminBaoProfessorBaotookhiscurrentpositionin2013afterservingintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversityasanassistantprofessor,seniorassistantprofessor,andassociateprofessor.Hisareasofresearchareappliedfibermechanicsandcompositematerialengineering,includingdevelopmentofFRPusingcarbonandsuper‐fibers.Impact characteristicsMy lab is working to develop a hybrid super‐fiberand carbon‐fiber FRP structure that exhibitsexcellent buffering properties and impactstrengthWe are also conducting research and development into a highly rigid and super‐light FRP that has a strengthened web structure inspired by bamboo fibers.Compositematerialsarebeingusedinanincreasinglybroadrangeofapplications.CFRPscomprisenearly90%ofthefuselageandwingsoftherecentlydevelopedBoeing787aircraft.UseofFRPsisalsoacceleratinginproductssuchascarsandwindmills.Engineering composite material structures that are stronger, lighter, and easier to recycle学科名等はこちらで入力いたしますOurlaboratory'sfocusishowtodesignintelligentbehaviorofrobotsemergedfromthemechanicalsoftness.Livingsystemsfromprimitiveonestohomosapiencearemadefromthree‐dimensionallydeformablematerialssuchasmuscles,tendons,andskintissues.Avastnumberofneuronsarenotnecessarilyrequiredtocontrolthesoftbodies.Primitiveorganisms,e.g.,caterpillarsandamoeba,controlthealmostinfinitedegreeoffreedomtheirbodieswithdistributedinformationprocessingsystemssuchasasmallnumberofneuronsandbiochemicalreactions.Ourlaboratoryconsiders"mechanicalsoftness"tobeanessentialdifferencebetweenmachinesandlivingthings.Inspiredbytheseprimitivelivingcreatures,wearedesigningtheintelligenceofsoft‐bodiedrobotsthatcanberealizedbythemechanicalsoftnessoftextiles,fibers,andrubber‐likematerials.Thisacademicfieldnamedsoftroboticsandproliferatinginrecentyears.‐Developmentofrobotsforuseinhumanlivingandwildenvironments(e.g.,caterpillar‐likerobotsformonitoringelectricwires,earthworm‐likerobotsformonitoringsoil).‐Digitalfabricationanddesignmethodsforgeneral‐purposesoft‐bodiedrobotsbyrapidprototypingwithdrasticreductionsinassemblycosts.‐Creationofnewacademicandindustrialfieldsthatproposesuchsoft‐bodiedrobotsinunprecedentedlycomplexenvironments.‐Furtherunderstandingofbiologicalsystemsbyusingthesoft‐bodiedrobotsasaplatform:Designing`lifeasitcouldbe’becausewecandesignthebodystructureandcontrolsystemsfreely.OurlaboratoryhadjuststartedupinNovember2019.Wehavenograduatesyet.However,throughourresearchactivities,studentscanlearnhowtodevelopanalgorithmicmechanicaldesign(automaticgenerationofshapesusingprograms),novelfabricationwaysusingrapidprototyping(3Dprintersandlasercutters),robotics,andsystemthinkingthroughtherobotdesign.Theskillsarerequiredinawiderangeoffields(e.g.,theautomobileindustryandIT/IoTcompanies).Caterpillar-inspired robot printed with 3D printing.
