18Leading amyloidosis center in JapanTeam AmyloidosisTeam Amyloidosis((Chief: Prof. Yoshiki SekijimaChief: Prof. Yoshiki Sekijima))Medicine IIISummary of ActivityAmyloidosis is an intractable disease in which abnormal protein, called ‘’amyloid’’, deposit into multi visceral organs and cause organ dysfunction. It is sometimes very difficult to diagnose and/or treat amyloidosis appropriately. Our department is one of the leading amyloidosis center in the nation, providing total services such as disease consultation, diagnosis, research, and treatment, especially in the field of two major types of amyloidosis, ATTR and AL amyloido-sis.・Liver transplantation and pharmacological treatment for ATTRm amyloidosis.・AL amyloidosis treatment using novel chemotherapeutic agents.・Development of whole body amyloid imaging technique using PiB-PET .・Neurophysiological evaluation and analysis of amyloid neuropathy.・Detection of rare types of amyloidosis using laser micro dissection and mass spectrome-try.Much common diseases such as Alzheimer Disease and type 2 diabetes are other kinds of amyloidosis. Our research works might lead to unveiling and overcoming of these popular diseases as well as a kind of rare types of amyloidosis. The both ways to a brilliant future as generalist and/or amyloidosis specialist are provided. Research subjectOutlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationDevelopment of novel pharmacological treatment mechanism focusing on the stabili-zation of precursor TTR tetramer protein.Diagnostic method for detecting whole body amyloid deposition using PiB-PET.Laser micro dissection and following mass spectrometry for detection of rare amyloidosis.Explore the whole body!Be generalist with specialized skills!Summary of ActivityDepartment of Medicine (Neurology and Rheumatology) is focusing on the development of skills to ex-plore the patients’ whole body. In the Neurology area, our target is total nervous system of the whole body which consist of the brain, spine, peripheral nerve, and muscles. There are many neurological disorders which do not show any abnormality in blood tests or imaging examination. Therefore it is very important to make a correct diag-nosis through the whole body physical examinations and neurological examinations. In the Rheumatology area, we see the patients with connective tissue disorders which mainly involve the whole body joints. You might be able to get the ability to find abnormal joints by touching and feeling the patients’ joints by your own hands. Amyloidosis is a disorder characterized by the deposition of abnormal protein called ‘amyloid’ into the whole body, such as the brain, heart, kidney, liver, digestive tract, peripheral nervous system, muscles, and endocrine systems. These visceral organs are also involved among the patients with rheumatic dis-eases. Therefore, you may get the specialized skills as an neurologist and rheumatologist and also get the gen-eral skills to see and manage the patients’ whole body issue.See following pages to check the details of our research works.▶Chief:Chief of Neurology: Yoshiki Sekijima (Prof.)Chief of Rheumatology: Yasuhiro Shimojima (associate Prof.)▶Divisions:1.
