ToshinoriTaishiThe Growth of Functional Single Crystals leads to the Future, Innovative Society!After GraduationIn the FutureElectrical& ComputerEngineeringMaininterestofourlaboratoryisthegrowthandevaluationofsemiconductingandfunctionaloxidesinglecrystalssuchassilicon(Si),siliconcarbide(SiC)andgalliumoxide,andsoon.Singlecrystalsareelectrically,optically,andmechanicallyhomogeneousmaterials.Forexample,SisinglecrystalsarewidelyusedforLSIdevicesorsolarcells.WeareoneoftheleadinggroupsinthefieldofbulkcrystalgrowthinJapan.Weareconductingvariouscooperativeresearchesrelatedto“GreenMaterials”withEmeritusProfessorKeigoHoshikawa.Several typical single crystals, such as silicon and sapphire, grown in our laboratory or cooperative companies.Wearecurrentlyworkingonthegrowthofvarioussinglecrystalscalled“GreenMaterials”thatcontributetoenvironmentalpreservation.Sapphire,oneofthekeymaterialsforourlaboratoryisusedasasubstrateforGaN-basedLEDdevices.Thuswestudythegrowthoflarge-scaleandhigh-qualitysapphirecrystalsbyverticalBridgmantechnique,whichisoneofthetypicalmeltgrowthmethods.Operators are observing the inside of the Czochralski growth furnace.
