Realizing a sustainable society through the effective utilization of biomass resourcesMicrowave chemistry43Department of Chemistry and MaterialsOutlookforresearchOutlookforresearchOutlook for students after graduationOutlook for students after graduationVariousbiomassresourcessuchaslipid,wood,andmicroalgaehavepotentialassustainablealternativefuels.However,itisessentialtoimprovetheefficiencyofconversiontorealizetheenergyutilizationofbiomassresources.Ourlaboratoryaimstoefficientlyconvertbiomassresourcestohigh‐gradefuelsandchemicalrawmaterialsusinganinexpensiveprocess.Weareworkingontheelucidationofcatalyticreactionmechanismanddesignofnewcatalysttoachievethesegoals.Mygoalistohelpdevelopasocietypoweredbycleanandsustainableenergythatdoesnotrelyonexhaustibleresourcessuchasfossilfuels.Further,Ihopetodevelopmethodsforsynthesizingusefulsubstancesusingbiomasstoreplacethemanychemicalproductsthatarecurrentlysynthesizedfromoilresources.Chemicalengineeringcanbeusefulinvariousfieldsofmanufacturingincludingchemicals,energy,materials,plantengineeringandsoon.Inourlaboratory,wewanttoacquireknowledgeofchemicalreactionengineeringaswellaswearitthroughresearchonhowtoutilizetheknowledge.LecturerIoriSHIMADADr.IoriShimadagraduatedfromTheUniversityofTokyoandobtainedhisdoctorateinenvironmentalstudiesin2013.Hetookhiscurrentpositionin2018afterworkingasaresearchfellowattheJapanSocietyforthePromotionofScienceandanAssistantProfessoratFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnology,ShinshuUniversity.Hisspecialtyischemicalreactionengineering.Energy and material uses of biomass resources. Optimizing catalytic reactions is the key to practical application.Catalytic activity test reactorCatalysts and reaction products from microalgae. The products can be used as gasoline additive.Department of Chemistry and MaterialsIamstudyingtocreatenewmaterialsusingmicrowavesandtheirphysicalproperties.The"radiowaves",youthinkthatcommunicationapplicationssuchasradioandtelevision,satellitecommunications,mobilephones,wirelessLAN,etc.arethemainapplications.Now,everyhomehasa"Microwaveoven"alsousessimilar"radiowaves",butthisisnotadeviceforcommunicationtool.Sincecookingcanalsobethoughtofasachemicalprocess,Iamfurthersearchingfor"usageforchemistry,chemicalreactionsandchemicalprocesses"touseadvancedscienceandengineering.Theoriginoftheresearchcanbeanything.Ifyouhavesomethingyouwanttodo,wondering,firstofall,itisimportantto"thinkyourself"forthatsolution.Youshouldbeabletopositivelyproposeprocesses(thingstodo)andsystems(concretesolutionstotheproblem)towardsissuestobesolvedinanyfield.AssistantProfessorTokihiroTakizawaAssistantProfessorTakizawagraduatedfromtheFunctionalPolymerScienceCourseintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.HetookhiscurrentpositionafterworkingintheFacultyasaresearchassociateandassistantprofessor.Hisareaofinterestisgeneralmaterialproperties.Irradiatingmicrowavestoinorganicmaterials(forexample,carbonparticle)usingthedomesticmicrowaveoscillatorintheabovephoto,itispossibletocreateacompacthigh‐temperaturefurnaceofabout800°C.orhigher.Thengaseousmethaneintocontactwithcarbon,itbecomesefficientconvertertogeneratehydrogen.
