Developing cutting‐edge polymer particles and pursuing science in the mysterious world of the micro‐scale500 nmDevelopment of Functional Polymeric Materials for Bio‐Applications40Department of Chemistry and MaterialsDepartment of Chemistry and MaterialsOutlookforresearchOutlookforresearchOutlook for students after graduationIamworkingtodevelopfunctionalpolymerparticles,atypeofmaterialthatisbotholdandnewandthatpromisesapplicationsinpaintsandinksandincomponentsforcutting‐edgematerials.Inmyresearch,Ifirstdesignfunctionalparticles,proposenewsynthesismethods,properlyevaluatetheresultingparticles,and,finally,considerthepossibleapplicationsinwhichtheycanbeexpectedtoplayausefulrole.Ihopetoconsultwithscientiststhroughouttheworldtounderstandthenano‐space,whichisinvisibletothenakedeye,andtocreatematerialsthatwillenrichourdailylives.Mygoalisforstudentstoexperiencethejoyofcreatingthingsduringtheirschoolyearstogivethemaninterestinscience.AssociateProfessorDaisukeSuzukiAfterobtaininghisdoctorate(inengineering)atKeioUniversity,AssociateProfessorSuzukiworkedasaresearcherattheGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyandattheUniversityofTokyo,andasanassistantprofessorundertheShinshuUniversityYoungResearchersEmpowermentProjectbeforetakinghiscurrentposition2013.Hespecializesinpolymerchemistry,colloidchemistry,andmaterialchemistry.Whilethisliquidlooksataglancelikemilk,herewearedispersingpolymerparticlesinnormalwater.Theparticles,whichareinvisibletothenakedeye,looklikethiswhenviewedthroughanelectronmicroscope.Eachparticlehasadiameterof400nm.Outlook for students after graduationThebodyidentifiesartificialmaterialsasforeignobjectsandattemptstoeliminatethemfromthebodyandneutralizeanyharmfuleffects.Consequently,thinkingof,anddeveloping,newpolymermaterialsthataremorecompatiblewithlivingorganismsareextremelyimportantstepsinthetreatmentofnumerousdiseases.Mylabisworkingtodevelopartificialextracellularmatrices(ECM)thatusenaturalmaterialssuchasproteinsandpolysaccharidesasrawmaterials.Clinicalapplicationsforthesematerialsareexpectedtoincludeusesinregenerativemedicine.Graduatesareprimarilyemployedbymaterialandchemicalmanufacturers,althoughsomeworkatcompaniesinvolvedinmedicalequipmentorpursueclinicalapplicationssuchasregenerativemedicine.AssociateProfessorAkiraTeramotoAssociateProfessorTeramototookhiscurrentpositionin2008afterworkingasaresearcherataprivatedairycompanyandasaresearchassociateandassistantprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofresearchincludethedevelopmentofsubstratesforcellculturingandthefunctionalevaluationofculturedcells.Osteoblasts from mice cultured on a non‐woven material made from cellulose nanofibersTissuecellsareculturedoveralongperiodoftimeusingapetridishwhosebottomiscoatedwiththematerialwecreated,andthentheyarekeptinadevicethatmaintainssanitaryconditionssothatwecanexaminetheirfunctionality.
