Shinshu University adopted this design for its lapel badge in 1950, and the motif has now become familiar to many people. In March 2010, the University redesigned the motif to make a new University emblem. The University logo features the initial “S” of Shinshu University, which forms the shape of a bird soaring beneath the prefecture’s wide open skies. The three feathers symbolize “education”, “research” and “contribution to society”, and together constitute the dynamic image of a broad wing representing the University’s flight towards the global community of the world. At the same time, the wing also symbolizes the idea of progress towards a future in which “nature”, “society” and “the individual” are united in harmony. The color scheme, with its gradated shades of lighter and darker greens, reflects the overflowing vitality of the natural environment in Shinshu, and is an expression of hope for the growth and development of the University and its students. コマクサは高山植物の女王といわれるほど気高く、信州を代表する花です。信州大学では1950年に襟章モチーフとなり、多くの人に親しまれてきました。2010年3月、学章として制定しました。 信州大学の頭文字「S」と信州の大空を雄々しく舞う鳥をモチーフにしたシンボルマーク。3枚の羽根は「教育」「研究」「社会貢献」を象徴し、それらが一体となった躍動感ある大きな翼は世界（国際社会）へ飛翔していくイメージを表します。そこには同時に、「自然」「社会」「個人」が一体となって未来社会に羽ばたくことも重ねられます。配色の明緑から濃緑へと変化する3色の緑には、生命力溢れる信州の自然を反映させ、学生の成長と大学の発展への願いが込められています。7
