Revealing the Limits of the Source Coding ProblemsNo intellect, no information. The nature of information is digital and discrete. It is invisible, but we can depict it with mathematical science.Each student handles his/her individual research problem.Discussion with the peers is important tosolve it. We must develop partnership and friendship.MikihikoNishiaraCommunication,broadcast,andreadingandwritingonastoragecanberegardedasprocessesofdeliveringinformationfromsourcestodestinations.Inourlab,weformulatethemathematicalmodelsofvariousinformationsystemsandexplorethetheoreticallimitsofthetheirperformance.Forexample,theimplementationofastreamingsystemrequiresaninvestigationoftradeoffbetweenthebandwidthandthecompression.Althoughmanykindsofsuchproductsarealreadyavailableforusage,thetruthbehindthephenomenonisstillnotclear.Atthestartofdigital-broadcasting,emergencysignalsweresenttogetherwithimagedata.However,itturnsoutthatthecompressionprocessofimagedelaysanemergencysignal,andsotheyareprocessedseparatelynow.Byinvestigatingthetradeoffbetweentheprocessingandthedelay,wecanimprovethetransmissionoftheemergencysignals.Associate ProfessorHe is at the present post since 2007 after a research associate of the university of electro-communications.
