Electrical& Computer EngineeringIn the FutureAfter GraduationMitsuhideSatoThissystemhasnocrankmechanism.Sincethecombustionenergyisconverteddirectlyintoelectricpower,themechanicallosscanbereduced.Serieshybridvehiclesusingfree-pistonenginecoupledwithlineargeneratorareexpectedforhigh-efficiencyenergyconversionsystems.Suchenginesdonothaveacrankmechanism,whichgreatlyreducesthefrictionloss.Inaddition,thepistonactioncanbecontrolledfreelybythegenerationbrakingthrustbyusinganinvertercontrol.OurLaboratoryisinterestedingeneratordesignandinverterpowergenerationcontrolforthepurposeofimprovingpowergenerationefficiency.Wearealsostudyingtheeffectofpistonmovementontheefficiencyofpowergenerationexperimentsusingsmallengines.Inrecentyears,electrificationhasgainedpopularityworldwidefortherealizationofasustainableautomotiveindustry.Thissystemwillbefundamentaltechnologiesforthefutureofautomotivesociety.Youwillworkasengineersandtechniciansinelectricalorprecisionmeasurementcompanies.AssistantprofessorPh.D.:ShinshuUniversityResearchfield:Lineargenerator/motorFree-piston Engine Linear Power Generation SystemBatteryFree-pistonInverterSpringCoilChargingSNNSNSSNSNNSNSSNSNSNSNNSSNSNSNNSLineargeneratorValveSparkplugFuelinjectorCombustionchamberSpringchamberPermanentmagnetStudentsdefinethespecificationanddesignacircuit.Tofabricateachip,acircuitdesignerdrawsalayoutwithnm-orderscalebyCADsoftware.VLSIchipandmeasurementboard.StudentsdesignandverifyaVLSIchiptoworkasrequired.KohJohguchiProgressesofelectronicsandinformationtechnologieshaveproducednewindustriesandservicesliketheInternet,amobilephone,etc.Espcially,thescalingtechnologyofVLSIrealizesawidevarietyoffunctionswithlowcost.Bythecommoditization,thematuredVLSItechnologyhasbeenusedinmanyareas.But,Japaneseelectronicsindustryisstrugglingwithcostcompetitiveness.Toovercomethis,wehavetodifferentiateproductsfromothersandcustomizeourVLSIchipwithacircuitdesigntechnology.Ourlaboratorywilldevelopanewcomputerarchitectureandsystemsbyco-designinghardware,softwareandapplication.“TrillionSensorsUniverse”iscomingupsoon.Trillionsensorscollectandcomputemanyinformationfromtherealworld.Then,VLSIcircuitdesignbecomesakeytechnologyformedicine,agriculture,husbandry,logistics,architectureandcivilengineering.Todistinguishproductsfromthecompetitorsandproduceuniqueproducts,VLSIinnovationisessential.Inourlaboratory,studentscanstudynotonlydigital/analogcircuitdesignbutessentialtechnologiesfromsensordevicestosoftware.Byresearchinginconsiderationoftheoutput,wewillplayavitalroleinthedevelopmentofInformationCommunicationTechnology(ICT).Asagraduationwork,studentsinJohguchiLab.proposeacircuitandarchitectureandusetheirinventivenesstotacklearesearchproject.Studentscanstudyawideareaincludingdevicephysics,measurementtechniqueandsoftwaredevelopment,etc.Also,successfulexperiencesofachievingsomethingbecomeusefulforthefuturejob.Associate ProfessorHe received the Ph.Ddegree from Hiroshima University in 2007.His research area is low power VLSI circuit design and computer architecture.
