ShinshuUniv.-RIKEN Collaboration LabNaokiKANAYAMAAssociateProfessorDoctor of Engineering (Tokyo Institute of Technology, 2002)Research Interest: Bio-Related Polymers, Colloid & Interface ScienceIn the FutureResearch MizuoMAEDAProfessorDoctor of Engineering (The University of Tokyo, 1983)Research Interest: Polymer Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, BiomaterialsOurlaboratorywasestablishedin2016basedonthecollaborationpartnershipbetweenRIKENandShinshuUniversity.Thepurposeofourresearchgroupistodevelophybridmaterialsbetweenartificialandbiologicalcomponentsforbioanalysisandclinicalapplications.Onthebasisofpolymerchemistry,materialchemistry,colloid&interfacescienceandbiochemistry,wearetryingtodevelopnewmaterialscomprisingbiologicalcomponents.Wealsofocusoncollaborationwithothergroupsandeducationofundergraduate/graduatestudents.Learn the Mysterious World Between Life and Materials from a Chemical PerspectiveJapanisenteringasuperagingsocietyaheadoftherestoftheworld,andmedicalneedsareexpectedtoincreaseanddiversify.Atthemoment,asacountermeasure,thereisaneedforachangetoasmarthealthcaresystemthatrealizespreventivemedicineandpreemptivemedicalcare.Forexample,inthehumangenome,itisbecomingclearthatslightsequencedifferences(single-nucleotidepolymorphisms:SNPs)inspecificpartsofgenesareinvolvedintheriskofdiseasedevelopmentanddrugsusceptibility.Althoughtheimportanceof“Tailor-madeMedicine"basedonindividualSNPinformationhasbeenstated,simpleandinexpensivedevicesthatanyonecanreceiveSNPdiagnosishavenotyetbeenrealized.Ourresearchgroupischallengingtheproblemofnext-generationmedicalcarethroughresearchondevelopmentandevaluationofbio-functionalmaterialscombiningartificialmaterialsandbiomaterials.72
