Hiromasa NishikioriWater,air,andsoilpurificationcanbeecologicallyachievedusingforcesofnaturewithoutharmingtheenvironment.Westudysuchpurificationprocessesutilizingnotonlyphotocatalysts,butalsonaturalclaymineralsasadsorbentsduringsolarlightirradiation.Wearealsoapplyingthetechnologyofphotocatalysistodye-sensitizedsolarcellsimitatingphotosynthesismechanismandtophotofuelcellsutilizingorganicwastesinordertocreatealternativeenergy.Itisimportanttodevelopsustainableenergytoestablishanecologicalsociety.Westudyoxidativedegradationofsomepollutantsandwastesandgenerationofelectricityusingthecompositesconsistingofphotocatalystsandnaturalclayminerals.Thistechnologycaninduceeffectiveadsorptionanddegradationoftheorganicsubstancesonthecomposites.Photofuelcellswiththecompositeelectrodescangenerateelectricitywithdisposalofthewastesusingphotocatalyticreaction.ProfessorEnvironmentalPhotochemistry,Photocatalysis.Blue dye in water can be degraded during light irradiation using phototcatalystssuch as titania.Water Purification and Energy Development using forces of NatureElectrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells.Graduatesareworkingactivelyinvariousfields,e.g.environmentalmanagement,waterandairdisposal,andelectronics.Weeducateourstudentssothattheyhavetheirownideastoutilizeforcesofnatureforenvironmentalconservationanddevelopmentofenvironmentally-friendlytechnology.An example of experiment in water purification.In the FutureAfter GraduationMaterialsChemistryTomohikoOkadaThereisademandformaterialswithmolecularrecognitionandseparationabilities.Preciselycontrolledadsorptivepropertiesatamolecularlevelareaprerequisite,andthuswehavebeenorganizingfunctionalorganicgroupsonsilica-basedmaterialstoinduceaselectiveadsorption.Spatialdistributionofthefunctionalgroupsinthesilicamatrixhasbeencontrolledtocreatetheactivesites(e.g.,porousstructures,reactionnano-vessels)forfutureapplicationsasanartificialenzymeandasensingdevice.Wehavebeeninterestedinhierarchicallydesignednaturalproductssuchaspreciousstonesandbeautifulanimaltissues.Periodicarrangementsofparticleswithdefinedshapescreatesuchproducts.Hybridizationoffunctionalgroupsonthesurfacesofparticleshasbeeninvestigatedforoptimizingtheperformancesincludingafacileseparationoforganicmolecules,andthedetectionofmoleculesbynakedeyes.Associate ProfessorHe received his Dr. degree from Waseda University in 2004.
