Artificial Membrane for Cell-Like MicrochemicalSystemsYukihisaOkumuraAbiologicalcellisanextremelysophisticatedmicrochemicalsystem.Thisfacthasledscientiststoconstructacell-likemicrochemicalsystembyhumanhands.Forthesystem,artificialplasmamembranesareessentialastheyseparatetheinnerworldfromtheoutsideandbecometheinterfacebetweenthetwoworlds.Ourresearchgroupstudieslipidmembranevesiclesthathavethesizecomparabletobiologicalcells(giantliposomes)assuchartificialcellmembranes.Theconstructionofasophisticatedartificialcellwillbeoneofthemajorscientificandtechnologicalachievements.Althoughthereclearlyisalongwayahead,manyresearchgroupsaroundtheworldhavebeenworkingontheproblem.Thetechnology,ifestablished,willbeusedinmanybio-relatedfields,suchasmedicineandagriculture.Anexampleofpossibleapplicationsisadrugdeliverysystemmoreefficientandcompatibletohumanbodies.ProfessorChemistry of artificial lipid membrane vesicles (liposomes)Bio-mimetic microchemicalsystems.Working with giant vesicles.
