Laboratory for Rural Planning Yoshiyuki UCHIKAWA Assistant Professor, Ph.D. Keywords; ・Hilly and mountainous areas ・Agricultural land use ・Land consolidation of paddy fields ・Conservation of terraced paddy fields The hilly and mountainous rural areas like Nagano prefecture ,comprises about 70% of the Japanese national land area and contains one-half of the agricultural communities. Numerous agricultural and forestry products are supported by the people and the environment of this area, and the need to balance the multiple functions of this region (national land conservation/ biodiversity/ social and cultural conservation, etc.) is a challenge. The Laboratory for Rural Planning is a developing technology, for studying land consolidation, and improving the living environment in these areas with the aim of building a new, sustainable society.
