Laboratory of Zoology Shigeyuki IZUMIYAMA Professor, Ph.D. Ecology Wildlife Japanese macaque GPS Asiatic black bear We have been researching ecology of wildlife inhabiting in cold climate or alpine environments where habitat is severe over a long-term period. Based on the results, we were able to determine the population dynamics of terrestrial wildlife due to global climate change and changes in the natural environment. Human-wildlife conflicts have raised public concerns in Japan. In particular, damages in croplands and plantations caused by wild animals have become a serious problem in small villages in remote mountain areas. To solve these problems, it is necessary to understand relationships between human and wildlife, and to manage wildlife, their habitat and human activities based on reliable scientific evidences. Research themes: ・Seasonal and altitudinal migration of Japanese macaque in the Northern Japan Alps. ・Seasonal migration of sika deer in the Japan Alps. ・GPS tracking of Argali (Ovis ammon) in the Kyrgyz Republic: Addressing problem in wildlife management. ・An evaluation of habitat selection of Asiatic black bear in a season of prevalent conflicts.
