Laboratory of Agroecology and Sustainable Horticulture Keywords: ・Herbivorous insects ・Plant chemical defences ・Plant ecology ・Soil ecology ・Sustainability in agricultural ecosystems To increase crop yields, farmers and scientists had struggled with insect pests, which can cause significant loss of crop production. Insecticides drastically improved the yields, but they have negative effects on environments and human health. Therefore, exploring the managements which can reduce the negative impacts is one of current research topics in agriculture. Now, the quality of crops is becoming more important than its quantity because people are showing more interest in the impact of food on health. Plants have defensive chemicals, which can have positive effects on human health and be increased by herbivory. Therefore, we are exploring effects of insect herbivory and crop field managements on crop yields and qualities. Research topics for students ・Effects of crop field managements on biodiversity and crop yields & qualities ・How do landscapes and weather conditions affect arthropods community in buckwheat fields? ・Glucosinolates in endemic turnips in Shinshu and their roles against insect pests ・Distributions of secondary metabolites in buckwheat and their roles against insect pests A B C A B C Bioresource Science Division Numerous organisms interact with plant roots. However, most interactions are not well-studied because of opaque soils. To realize sustainable management in crop fields, we have especially studied insect-plant interactions in soils. Plant chemicals (secondary metabolites) such as glucosinolates act as key-substances in plant-insect interactions. Therefore, we quantify them, and elucidate their roles in the interactions.
