Laboratory of Agronomy Shigemitsu KASUGA Professor, Ph.D. Research field Agronomy Breeding Science Research keywords; Sorghum, Rye, Wild grape, Pear, Strawberry The Laboratory of Agronomy conducts research on the breeding, cultivation and utilization of sorghum. We also conduct research on other field-grown crops in production at the AFC(Education and Research Center of Alpine Field Science)campus station including paddy rice, rye, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants. Breeding, cultivation and utilization of sorghum A B C D A B C Breeding of sorghum and rye Breeding and cultivation of new wild grape variety‘Shindai W-3’ Breeding, cultivation and utilization of rye Breeding and cultivation of wild grape Bioresource Science Division 15 Plant Genetics and Breeding Laboratory Kenichi MATSUSHIMA Associate Professor, Ph.D. Chili pepper Buckwheat Genetic resources Ethnobotany Local traditional variety Molecular genetics Advanced theory and practical methods of plant breeding based on the latest knowledge in genetics and biotechnology will be provided for graduate students by two Professors through seminars and dissertation research for M.S. / Ph.D. degrees with a well-equipped laboratory and field. And also, Research for preservation and reevaluation of local varieties of vegetables and crops are carried to develop agriculture in rural area. The main research materials are chili pepper and buckwheat. International students will be cordially received. Ethnobotanical research on plant resources has been carried out in field explorations of overseas countries as well as in Japan. Collected plant resources such as buckwheat, chili pepper and amaranth including their wild relatives are being investigated in a phylogenetic study and evaluated as breeding materials. A B C D A B C Breeding research using the latest methods of biotechnology is a major research effort. For example, interspecific hybridization using embryo/ovule culture, expression analysis of specific gene and development of DNA markers linked with desired genes for marker assisted selection are being advanced in buckwheat and chili pepper. Bioresource Science Division Left; Interspecific hybrid of chili pepper using embryo culture technique. Right; New variety of chili pepper developed for rural area.
