―30―Development of Novel Biomaterials and Analysis of Musculoskeletal SarcomaOrthopaedic surgeons use articial joint, articial bone and bone xation material to operate on diseases of bones and joints. We call the materials to implant into the body by surgery “biomaterials”. We evaluate the biocompatibility of novel biomaterials to develop superior materials.Furthermore I treat patients with musculoskeletal sarcoma as an orthopaedic oncologist. So, I also conduct research into treatment outcomes, resection range, rehabilitation, postoperative function and education related to musculoskeletal sarcomas.Graduated from Shinshu University, School of Medicine, and Graduate School of Shinshu University. Member of the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. Associate Professor Kaoru AokiThere are cases where patients require reoperation because the biomaterials have been damaged by long-term use. High-functional biomaterials can reduce the need for reoperations. Our research into sarcomas can improve the outcomes for patients with sarcomas. Our students can acquire the license of the physical therapist after they pass the national examinations. They can be employed in hospitals and clinics, among others, as physiotherapists. Further-more, they can enter our graduate school and continue research for medical developments.Outlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationResearch into the controlled use of physical energy for treatmentElectrophysical Agents (EPA) is an area of expertise in Physical Therapy. However, in order to use EPA effectively in treatment, it is necessary to understand how to control the energy, and to deliver it adequately to the target tissues: too little energy would have no physiological effects, and too much can cause serious damage to the cells and tissues. This control of energy for treatment is called “dosimetry”. For the past 20 years, my research has been based on dosimetry in the area of heat (thermotherapy), electricity (electrotherapy) and mechanical traction (mechanotherapy). The results from research into dosimetry is important for developing treatment models which can be used as clinical guidelines for the treatment of patients. Without such clinical guidelines, the effectiveness of any treatment using EPA may be difcult to achieve.Upon graduation, most students are employed in hospitals and other medical facilities throughout Japan. Some of these graduates can also choose to further their education by enrolling in post-graduate Masters or PhD courses by research in their area of interest or specialization.Outlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationBorn in Singapore, Dr. Goh graduated as a physical therapist from Auckland (NZ), Masters from Sydney (Australia), and PhD from Perth (Australia).
