―26―MedicalTechnologyCutting edge technology for cyto-pathological diagnosisCytology is the study of cells extracted from a disease location under a microscope in order to diagnose a disease. Cytology requires advanced medical knowledge and training. A medical technologist (cytotechnologist; CT) is the one who is able to perform cytological examinations in hospitals and research institutes. A high percentage of the students in our laboratory also move on to training facilities for CTs. In future, as students acquire basic knowledge to become CTs, they will perform discriminant analysis and immunohistochemistry on computer using advanced technology.Cancer is a leading cause of death; early detection improves the odds of successful treatment. Cytological examination plays an important role in early detection. With the help of computers and the latest developments in immunohistochemistries, diagnostic accuracy will greatly improve.After graduation, Medical technologists can work at hospitals, laboratories, or pharmaceutical companies.
