―23―Medical TechnologyAiming for healthy life by elucidating the mechanism of lipid metabolism abnormalityBesides the energy source of activity and the material for making cells, lipids work on various body adjustment functions. In particular, lipid decomposing substances (metabolites) are attracting attention as substances that reveal the state of cells. In order to analyze diverse lipid molecules, we use mass spectrometry to study these substances.Abnormalities in lipid concentration and composition in the blood are indicators of lifestyle diseases such as arteriosclerosis. Lifestyle diseases such as dyslipidemia and diabetes are a major social issue and are still on the rise. Currently we support improvement, prevention and education for lifestyle diseases of young people and the elderly.Adolescents’ lipid metabolism abnormality is frequently high, and there is concern that this may progress toward future lifestyle diseases. In elderly people, the relevance of lipid to dementia is drawing attention. We aim to apply lipid research as an inspection of early diagnosis markers and therapeutic effect evaluation markers. We believe that the practical use of research can contribute to society. We are living in a long lifespan society, but it is everyone’s wish to live not just a long life but also a healthy life. From lipid molecule research to social contribution, I would like to see an increase in the number of people who can contribute to human health.Clinical LaboratorySciencesOutlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationGraduated from Shizuoka Pharmaceuti-cal University Graduate School, and vis-iting researcher at Baker Medical, Clin-ical Laboratory. Department, Shinshu University Hospi-tal.Currently in 2003.Associate Professor Hiroya HidakaEstablishment of techniques and laboratory procedures for cell therapyAn immune system protects us from pathogenic microorganisms and viruses. It is known that failure of the immune surveillance system not only causes infectious diseases, but is also involved in cancer formation and its progression. Nowadays, immunotherapy against cancer is rapidly developing worldwide. Our laboratory is establishing reliable methods to evaluate the therapeutic effects of immunotherapy against cancer, and also searching for biomarkers that can predict the therapeutic effect of immunotherapy.Completed the doctoral course (Medicine) of Shinshu University Graduate School. Ap-pointed as Assistant Professor since 2014, after working as a medical technologist at the Department of Clinical Laboratory and Cell Processing Center in Shinshu University hospital.Assistant ProfessorYumiko HiguchiCell therapy is a treatment method using live cells including bone marrow transplantation, peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, immunotherapy, and regenerative medicine. While this eld has been developing rapidly in recent years, there is a shortage of engi-neers with expertise in this area. Clinical laboratory technologists are considered to be very suitable for, and expected to play an active role in the eld of cell therapy.Employment as a medical technologist in the clinical department of hospitals or as a technician in the field of cell therapy.Outlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationMedical TechnologyClinical LaboratorySciencesA wide variety of lipid prole by lipid (phospholipid, triglyceride and cholesterol ester molecule) analysis using mass spectrometryResearch by graduate studentsFaculty and students contribute to healthy life“Hirameki☆Tokimeki Science” of JSPS with childrenThe students are learning the basis of immunologic laboratory procedures. The clean bench provides a sterile environment.
