M.Shimizu LabNext-generationenergystoragedevicesthatuseNa-ionorMg-ionasthechargecarrier,Na-ionbattery(NIB)andMg-ionbattery(MIB),haveattractedmoreandmoreattentionbecauseofthoselowcostandnaturalabundance.Inordertorealizethebatterieswithahighenergydensity,ourresearchgroupfocusesondevelopmentofcarbon-andalloy-basedhostmaterialswhichcanabsorbmuchchargecarrierperthoseformulaweightandsuitableelectrolytesolutionsincollaborationwithProf.Araigroup.Rechargeablebatteriesareindispensableinadailylifeinthepresent.Toeffectivelyuserenewableenergy,“storageofenergy”issignificantlyimportant,andbatterieswithhighcapacityandlong-lifetimearerewired.Ourgroupattemptstodevelophigh-performanceelectrodematerialsandsuitableelectrolytesolutionsforNa-,Mg-ionbatterieswhichleadtotherealizationofalow-carbonsociety.MasahiroShimizuAssistantProfessorHereceivedhisDr.degreefromTottoriUniversityin2016.Hisresearchfocusesondevelopmentofelectrodematerialsforrechargeablebatteries(NIBandMIB).DevelopmentofElectrodeMaterialsforNext-generationRechargeableBatteries(right)TEMimageofSiliconoxideparticles(activematerial)preparedbyasol-gelmethod.(left)Studentinourgroupfabricatescoin-typecellwithinagloveboxfilledwithanargonatmospherefromwhichtheoxygenandwaterhadbeencompletelyremoved.Variousanalyticalinstruments(TEM,FIB,FE-SEMetc.)arerequiredformaterialcharacterization,andtheexperienceindealingwiththemwillbeabigadvantageaftergraduation.Throughthestudiesofelectroplatingandelectrodematerials,wedeveloppeoplewithoutstandingspecialistcapabilitieswhocanplayintheinternationalarena.In the FutureAfter GraduationDiameter: 200300 nm30nmBatteryconstituentmaterials.Ingeneral,batteryisconsistedofactivematerials,binder,conductiveadditive,currentcollector,andelectrolytesolution.ArMaterialsChemistrySaeki LabBiologicalcellshaveuniquestructuresandfunctions.Cellmembranes,mainlycomposedofalipidbilayer,keepsintracellularenvironmentsandrealizesexcellentmolecularrecognition.Inthecell,advancedproductionoffunctionalbiologicalmaterialsisalsoperformed.SaekiLab,collaboratingwithProf.OkumuraLab,focusesonabioinspiredapproachforfabricationoffunctionalmaterialsand/orprocesses,suchasartificialcells,microbioreactors,andseparationmembranes.Bioinspiredapproachesusinglipidbilayersand/orbiomacromoleculeslikeasproteinsandDNA,whichmanagevariousbiologicalfunctions,realizesprecisecontrolofunder-nanometer-orderedstructuresandfunctions.Therefore,theyhaveattractedattentiontodevelopvariousfunctionalmaterialsappliedformicroreactors,molecularseparation,biosensors,etc.DaisukeSaekiAssistantprofessorHe completed doctoral degree in University of Tsukuba, and started to work in Shinshu Univ. in 2018. His research field is biochemical engineering and interfacial chemistry.Bioinspired Fabrication of Functional MaterialsIn the FutureOurgroupstudentswillgetresearchingskillstoextractproblemsfromaresearchtheme,thinksolutions,andsolvethem,whicharerequiredtoworkastechnicalexpertsandresearchers.MaterialsChemistryAfter GraduationDevelopmentofvariousfunctionalmaterialsviabioinspiredapproaches.ProteinsynthesisinmicrocapsulesMembranestoseparatetargetmoleculesusingbiologicalmoleculesincellmembranes.Fabricatedmaterialsareevaluatedbyusingfluorescentmicroscopy,AFM,permeabilityevaluationapparatus,etc.17
