            Mycorrhiza Laboratory  Akiyoshi YAMADA AssociateProfessor  Research Keywords;  Ectomycorrhiza,      Edible mycorrhizal  mushrooms,   Fungal ecology   Ectomycorrhizal fungi consist of over ten-thousand species and symbiotically associate with roots of diverse woody plants in nature. Most ectomycorrhizal fungi make fruiting bodies, i.e. mushrooms. The mycorrhizal symbiosis has been studied extensively in terms of plant growth promotion, the carbon cycle in the ecosystem, and plant-fungus co-evolution. In addition, cultivation of gourmet mushrooms such as matsutake and truffles is also popular. Our laboratory has studied ectomycorrhizal fungi and their symbioses with host plants multi-dimensionally. Ecophysiology of ectomycorrhizal mushrooms: To establish cultivation systems of mycorrhizal mushrooms with host plants, we have focused on basic fungus–plant interaction mechanism of mycorrhizal symbiosis   Fruiting of Tricholoma matsutake under  natural forest condition in Nagano In vitro mycorrhizal synthesis of T. matsutake with pine host  Integrated Bioscience Division Morphological and anatomical characterization of ectomycorrhizas: To understand real nature of ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, we have described its structural characteristics in the diverse fungus–plant combinations Detection, estimation and pure culture of symbiotic fungi from soil: To understand diversity of fungus–plant symbioses, we have tried to find new and rare fungal species and establish their cultures in vitro. 6
