We utilize tree rings for estimation of changes in radial growth to future climate changes. We can also reconstruct past climate changes using dendroclimatologicaltechniques.ABCDABCEstimation of growthchanges of trees under climate change.Research activities of the laboratorymembersWood anatomy and formationWe focused on tree ring structures such as density, cell dimensions. Observations on seasonal radial growth and stable isotopes in annual rings can provide good information for understanding wood formation and environmental changes.髄樹皮1800177017801790101mmWood Utilization LaboratoryTakashiTAKEDAProfessorMechanicalpropertiesofJapaneselarchtimber;Woodandwood-basedmaterials;Effectsofkiln-dryingonwoodmechanics;Wood-basedstructuralpanelsforprefabricatedhouses;Shinshugluedbuilt-upbeams.Basedonknowledgeofwoodscienceandtechnology,theprimarygoalofourresearchistopromotewoodmaterialutilizationforwoodenhousesandbuildings.Mainresearchsubjectsare(1)structuralusesofwoodandwood-basedmaterials,(2)Mechanicalpropertiesofstructurallumberkiln-driedbythehigh-temperaturesettingmethod,and(3)Effectsofaccidentalwettingonshearpropertiesofstructuralplywood.Inadditiontothose,variousinterestedthemesareenvironmentalimpactassessmentbytheLIMEforpelletmanufacturing,utilizationofconcreteformpanelsforcivilengineering,andsoon.For structural uses of wood and wood-based materials, we must know nature of wood primarily. Then mechanical tests are conducted to obtain performance of the materials with the testing machine.ABCDABCFig. 1. Shear properties of structural plywood for wood-based panels.Fig. 2. Static bending test for Shinshu glued built-up timber with GIR.The high-temperature setting method is one of kiln-drying technic with steam above one hundred degree centigrade. The method achieves less surface checks but weakens strength of the dried lumber .Wooden structural panels are composed of plywood and lumber, and they are members of wooden fabricated houses. Effects of accidental wetting on mechanical properties of plywood are investigated (Fig.1). Collaborative Research on Shinshu glued built-up timber is continuing with Nagano Prefecture Forestry Research Center (NPFRC). Static bending tests were conducted at NPFRC (Fig.2). We also investigate on mechanical properties within cross section for them.Division of Forest and EnvironmentalSymbiosis Sciences33
