Shinshu University Disaster Mitigation and Prevention Center aims to promote educational research on disaster prevention and mitigation for the local community to prepare against disaster while cultivating appropriate human resources while using the results of the research.•Mission We, “AREAS”, collaborate with local public organizations, industries, and community members to research underlying regional issues, and propose solutions with academic resources for the better regional society.•ScopeWorking as a hub among regions and universities, we produce regional-issues-solving projects with industry-academia-government collaboration.Extension courses for the general publicOutline of Open Classes for Local Citizens•Classes Open to the Local CommunityWithin the all general lectures (School of General Education and 8 faculties) the students take every year, about 900 are open to the public. We have almost 300 attendants each year combining the first and the second semesters. •Public Programs for Local CitizensWith the requests from public facilities and organizations such as community centers, lifelong learning facilities, and schools, the teachers of our university go out to different locations within Nagano prefecture to offer 120 lectures per year with about 9,000 attendants in total. •Extension Courses These are extension courses for the general public that cater to local residents.
