With the local community Shinshu University “Forest of Knowledge”7Shinshu University ranked overall top for three years running, in a National Survey of the Degree of Contribution to a Local Community by a University, conducted by the Nikkei Research Institute of Industry and Regional Economy between 2012 and 2014.There are several reasons why the university is so highly appraised, including the number of open courses and on-demand courses for the general public and the frequency of symposiums and forums, as well as the diverse partnership programs and the large number of contracted or cooperative research studies and joint studies pursued through industry-academia-government collaboration.The university has a very high number of partnership agreements with local governments and organizations, and wide-ranging collaborative initiatives to solve the issues faced by semi-mountainous areas and promote the handing down of local culture are undertaken across Nagano Prefecture by taking advantage of the dispersed campuses that are a hallmark of the university. The university also features many activities led by the students and student clubs as well as the faculty members.A university that exists alongside the local community, is loved by, and walks hand-in-hand with the local communityCenter for Advanced Regional Strategy in Shinshu to Promote Resolution of Regional IssuesEstablishment of Shinshu University Disaster Mitigation and Prevention CenterCenter for Advanced Regional Strategy in Shinshu collaborates with local public organizations, industries, and community members to consider matters necessary to solve underlying regional issues, and aims to revitalize the regional communities by proposing countermeasures against such issues to relevant organizations.In April 2015, Shinshu University established Shinshu University Disaster Mitigation and Prevention Center to promote research and education concerning regional disaster prevention and mitigation in an organized and consistent manner as well as to utilize the research results on disaster generating mechanisms to contribute to enhance the local capability of disaster management for prevention and mitigation in regional cooperation.
