International Center for Science and Innovation at Shinshu University was subsidized by the Japanese Government and situated at the Nagano (engineering) campus as part of “Projects that Establish International Scientific Innovation Hubs in University-Industry Collaborations Utilizing Regional Resources” (FY2012) under guidance provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The Center promotes industry-academia-government collaborations undertaken by a single Japanese team under one roof and identifies significant R&D challenges with a view to 10 years on and while providing the “opportunity” for different disciplines to come together, i.e. a platform for creating innovations in the Shinshu area.The Center also serves as the core of the “Global Aqua Innovation Center (COI)” that involves the establishment of innovative water desalination and reclamation systems, as mentioned on the previous page. Exhibition space for presenting research resultsOpen innovation under one roofDialog studios and seminar spaceWe disseminate information on a daily basis via an exhibition space that provides an overview of ongoing research projects and research results at Shinshu University. At Global Aqua Innovation Center (COI) corner, in addition to an introductory zone, which includes videos and panels that provide a simple project overview, more than 10 panels and several videos are exhibited to show the latest results of the individual research teams. The NEWS space gets updated as needed.The “Institute of Carbon Science and Technology (ICST)” and “Center for Energy and Environmental Science” that are part of Shinshu University’s unique Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER) are situated in the project laboratories on the 6th and 7th floors. In addition, researchers from Shinshu University and other research institutes and related companies work together in an office on the 3rd floor that has no individually allocated desks in the aim of thereby creating open innovations. A total of 16 rental laboratories are available for use by research institutes and companies on the 4th and 5th floors. Future-oriented dialogs (future sessions) are available in the Oval Studio (accommodates 40 people) and Square Studio (20 people) that can be used to identify significant R&D challenges, origin of innovations. The seminar space accommodates about 250 people and can be used to present the latest results and to hold symposiums. 19
