Some devices are “shared” and open for use by partner institutions and companies. The project utilizes state-of-the-art environmentally-friendly equipment in thereby reducing primary energy consumption and CO2 emission to half in comparison with a research building of the same size. An advantage of the location, namely the abundant groundwater, enables the Center to use it as a heat source for the air-conditioning system and then reuse it in the toilets and for other general services. The amount of energy “visualized” via use of monitors situated on each floor also contributes to raising the awareness of researchers concerning the issue and reducing energy consumption.18
