    Precautions

    • In light of the nature of the program, individuals interested in applying should first discuss the specifics with their faculty advisor and with the private-sector company with which they plan to conduct joint research.
    • The Shinshu University Innovative Research & Liaison Organization (SUIRLO) will provide support for discussions with private companies and other entities, so please contact the Program Secretariat as soon as possible if you are interested in applying.
    • Those who will receive a Japan Student Services Organization Type 1 Scholarship after 2023 are not eligible for the recommendation of "repayment exemption due to particularly outstanding achievements" in the doctoral course of the graduate school.
    • As a rule, the stipend will be paid in monthly allotments into the account specified by each fellow.
    • Because the subsidy offered by the program is treated as miscellaneous income, students must file a tax return every year. International students should check with the local tax office for more information as subsidy taxation varies with the provisions of each country's tax treaty with Japan.
    • You may be able to treat admission fees and expenditures related to study and research as necessary expenses when filing your tax return.
    • If you are a dependent of a relative, please inform that person of your selection to participate in the program as the receipt of the stipend may disqualify you as a dependent.
    • It is necessary to submit a dependent transfer form (for the student in question) since the student's national insurance (health insurance and welfare pension insurance) will be removed from his or her supporter. Since the conditions and procedures for removing the student as a dependent vary with the type of insurance, check first with the insurance provider (employer, etc.). (The student should check on the procedure for removing himself from the insurance provider through the individual with duty of support and inquire with the city office or other agency.)
    • Students who are no longer dependent on their parental guardians and live separately from them with independent livelihoods may be eligible for tuition waivers.
    • Resident tax is applied the following year to income for the current year. You will be required to pay the tax to the municipality where you reside. A notice of the tax amount will be sent to you in June of the following year. Please pay the tax then.
    • To use research funding, you will need to consult with your faculty advisor or faculty mentor and complete a process that have been put in place to ensure proper use of funds in keeping with university rules related to public funding and under the supervision of your faculty advisor.
