Toray and NTT enter into the medical business with “smart clothing” using fibers which are capable of obtaining biological information. One new fiber material was certified as a medical device, the material being capable of monitoring a cardiac electrogram for 24 hours to detect arrhythmia. Toray will supply underwear using the material, for hospital use from 2017. It is the first to be used as a medical device, though various companies have been competing in developments of smart clothing.
