Toray developed a suede-type artificial leather “Ultrasuede® PX”from the waste molasses of sugar cane.
“Ultrasuede® PX”is a partially plant-based polyester made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol obtained from waste molasses. Ethylene glycol obtained from the waste molasses, a by-product at sugar mills, is used as a part of raw materials, but resulted polyester has the same texture and function as conventional polyester. Toray is planning to expand its application to the car and fashion areas in future. This is a first bio-based suede-type artificial leather commercial production, started last October.
