PDF Studies on Exercise Prescription for Middle- and Old-aged Persons -Development of Methods to Estimate Energy Expenditure from Heart Rates-

【Supercategory:7. DESCENTE SPORTS SCIENCE Subcategory:7.2 Vol.2

In order to estimate energy expenditure indirectly, the relationships between heart rates (HR) and oxygen uptake (VO₂) were obtained in five healthy male university students by using Monark bicycle ergometer. As could be expected, there was a very high correlation between HR and VO₂. Estimated energy expenditure on non-steady state exercise was calculated by substituting HR histogram for an equation of relationship between HR and VO₂. Compared to the values by actual measurement, the estimated values were smaller than the actually measured values during exercise, and vice versa during recovery. Total energy expenditure by each method was, however, similar. It has been suggested that the indirect methods are useful provided that HR-VO₂ relationships during lower activities, for example, supine, sitting, standing and other positions are obtained.
