Mental Condition of Athletes
【Supercategory:7. DESCENTE SPORTS SCIENCE Subcategory:7.15 Vol.15】
Using date collected from cosecutive examinations of POMS and condition records, we conducted a case study of the relationship between mental condition and competitive performance. The subjects were male swimmers, soccer players and volleyball players, as well as female judo players.
Major findings obtained were as follows ;
(A) The mental condition of those who performed well had been very stable with no change in POMS profiles for a week before competition.
(B) Those who had had an iceberg-type profile before competition generally performed well. This result indicates the efficacy of POMS monitoring.
(C) Individual POMSs before two different competitions were com-pared for several athletes. Both POMSs showed similar iceberg-type profiles, but they differed in the three elements of tension, vigor and fatigue. The differences were related to how well he or she performed in the two competitions.
(D) Consecutive plotting of the total POMS scores (psychological stress scores) is an effective index for identifying changes in the athlete's condition as well as for prevention of over training.
(E) For team sports, it has significant merit in that it can monitor changes in the average profile of the entire team, not to mention monitoring individual players' profiles.
