Toray Industries, Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding with a major Thai petrochemicals producer PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) to explore mass production technology for adipic acid made from non-edible biomass. The muconic acid (precursor of adipic acid) and the adipic acid produced by the technology perform like petroleum-derived nylon-6,6, and can serve as raw materials for nylon-6,6. Toray and GC will jointly evaluate the feasibility of mass production technology and commercialisation, in Thailand and Japan. They will assess business viability, and aim to commercially manufacture several thousand metric tons of muconic acid and bio-based adipic acid by 2030.
