TORAY developed an ultra-fine filament type nanofiber (a diameter is 15onm) and a nanfiber with a Y-shaped cross-section (a diameter 500nm).
The success is due to the technological progress in the precision conjugate spinning by controlling micro polymer flow and the high precision control of non-circular cross-section. The developed nanofibers possess the high fiber surface ratio per fiber weight and the inter-fibrous space can be arbitrarily controlled. In consequence, the improved nanofiber properties could be expected as higher moisture absorption, water absorption, water retention, and friction coefficient. These nanofibers are expected to be applied not only in the apparel/clothing area but also for the industrial use as the filtration/separation and wiping performance could be improved.
