TEIJIN announced that TEIJIN’s aramid fiber “TECHNORA” was adopted for the suspension cord connecting the parachute and the main body of the Mars Exploration Rover “CURIOSITY”. The probe vehicle was launched last November, and landed on Mars at the beginning of this August. The parachute was used when the prove vehicle entered the Mars atmosphere and parachuted down while decelerating from 1,450 km/hr to 290 km/hr. The gravity exerted on the parachute at landing was 9 G (9 times on the earth), indicating the suspension cord made of aramid fiber bore the weight of 27 tons.
