Toray has developed 100% bio-based adipic acid, which is the raw material of nylon 66 (polyamide 66), by using sugars obtained from inedible biomass. This is the world’s first success. The technique applied is a synthesis of microbial fermentation technology and chemical purification technology that harnesses separation membranes. The company aims its practical use around 2030, through experimental polymerisation of nylon 66, production engineering development, and market research.
