If there was a robot that could shift its shape to anything, what function do you think it would have? You may have imagined a swarm of microscopic robots, or a robot that could make a phase transition between liquid and solid. I think of the robot as a curved surface, because the outermost part of the object can be represented by a single surface. However, the history of research on surface robots is short, and current robots have not yet achieved the ability to shift their
shape to anything. Therefore, we are proposing new surface robots and control theories by making full use of mathematics to describe curved surfaces, computer graphics technology and knowledge of biology. We are also looking for a new way to develop a theory of control for the continuum robots that have been developed so far.
