Repetitive brain concussion in playing football, judo, and rugby induces cognitive dysfunctions such as memory dysfunction. The brain becomes vulnerable and sensitive to stimuli by repeated head collisions, resulting in decreasing the threshold of brain injury. The rapid deformation of brain tissue is typically caused by head impact in traffic accidents because the inertia force is applied to the brain tissue by sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head. Thereby neurons are stretched, and axons, which play a role in neurotransmission, are injured and disrupted. We have developed the criteria of axonal injury through the impact loading experiment of brain neuronal cells to better understand the mechanism of axonal injury in repetitive brain concussion.
