Message from the Dean

What does the Faculty of Science do? In English, it is called "faculty of science," but science is usually translated as "science. I do not know how the name "faculty of science" came to be used, but I would say that "science" is a more accurate description of the role of a faculty of science than "science" in the sense that it is a study of "facts". In the Faculty of Science, the main focus is on the logical thinking of the origins and mechanisms of things. In particular, the Faculty of Science pursues the principles and laws of natural phenomena.

On the other hand, "science" up to high school is also called science in English, but science does not include mathematics. This is probably because mathematics is not a study of natural phenomena. However, as is clear from the fact that Newton developed differential and integral calculus at the same time as mechanics, mathematics and physics are inseparable. Mathematics is the best language to describe not only physics but also natural phenomena, and it occupies an important position as the basis of science. For this reason, most of the faculties of science, including Shinshu University, have departments and courses of mathematics. Mathematics itself has many interesting mysteries and is studied every day, and of course, the natural world is also full of various wonders.
It can be said that the Faculty of Science attracts people who pursue such mysterious phenomena until they are satisfied with the results.
Many people may wonder what kind of job they will be able to get after graduating from the Faculty of Science, since research in the Faculty of Science is so out of this world. In fact, the ability to logically pursue the truth is a widely sought-after quality in today's complex society, and graduates of science departments and graduate schools of science are in demand by job recruiters in many companies. Many graduates find jobs in finance, IT, and other industries that have little to do with their majors during their school days. Of course, there are also many students who aim to become teachers or researchers. In order to meet the needs of such diverse students, the Faculty of Science at Shinshu University offers three educational programs: the "Advanced Program," the "Standard Program," and the "Interdisciplinary Program.

Another characteristic of the Faculty of Science at Shinshu University is the close proximity between students and faculty members and graduate students. For example, in the Advanced Program, there are advanced courses in which advanced experiments and exercises are conducted in small groups. In addition, there is a "Science Lounge" where senior students and graduate students can answer questions from junior students, and many students actively participate in this program every year.

Of course, the location of the Faculty of Science of Shinshu University, where you can see beautiful mountains of 3000m class, is also a major attraction of studying at the Faculty. We hope you will pursue the truth of nature in this beautiful region of Shinshu.
