Standing at an altitude of more than 4000 meters, the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, which primarily spans Qinghai Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region in Central Asia, is the world's highest and largest plateau. It is often referred to as the "Roof of the World".
Qinghai University Medical College, located in Qinghai Province, and the Department of Medicine (Respirology, Infectious Disease) at Shinshu University School of Medicine have been conducting joint research on mountain sickness for many years. This collaboration led to the academic exchange agreement being signed by the two institutions.
From 17 to 18 September 2025, a delegation from Qinghai University Medical College visited Shinshu University School of Medicine to commemorate the renewal of the agreement, and a joint seminar was held as the 37th International Seminar.
Dr. KOBAYASHI Toshio, who initiated and nurtured this collaboration, gave opening remarks and mentioned its history.
Dr. WADA Yosuke from the Department of Medicine (Respirology, Infectious Disease), explained, based on the studies that show administering SU5416, VEGFR2 inhibitor, to rats induces emphysema with pulmonary hypertension, the potential roles of VEGFR2 and Nox4 in emphysema with pulmonary hypertension in an easy-to-understand way using many data.
Dr. Tana Wuren from Qinghai University gave an interesting and engaging presentation on the mechanisms of high-altitude adaptation, particularly the effects of hypoxia on the placenta.
About thirty participants, including graduate and undergraduate students, doctors, and faculty, attended the seminar and listened intently to the talks, which were followed by a lively question-and-answer session.
We look forward to the collaboration becoming even more active in the future and leading to significant achievements in research and education.
