統計学は、将来の不確定な要素を一種の「確率変数」として考え、過去のデータを基にして、そこに何らかの法則性（どんな風に「不確定」なのかという法則 で、「確率分布」と呼ばれます。）を見出すことを一つの任務としていますが、その中の一分野である「統計的決定理論」は、データを基に、最終的に下した決 定がどうしたら一番リスクが少なくなるかを考える学問です。統計学の「推定」と「検定」を、いわば理論的に抽象化したもので、1950年代から60年代に かけては、統計学のもっとも先端的な花形の分野でありました。今では、すっかりやせ衰えた畑のようで、細々と研究が続けられているような状況ですが、まだ まだ研究の余地は残っていると自分は考えています。一方、多変量解析は、何種類ものデータ間の関連性を掘り下げる学問ですが、回帰分析・判別分析・因子分 析等の個々の手法が、コンピューターの進化とともに、いろんな分野で手軽に利用できるようになり、応用の面から言えば、現在、大変な隆盛期にあるといえま す。そうした個々の手法の基礎にあるのが、上記の「確率分布」なのですが、多変量の「確率分布」は、かなり複雑で未解決の問題が沢山残っています。
