Plant organelles possess essential functions to maintain the plant-specific lifestyle. The huge vacuoles and plastids (chloroplasts) are typical plant-specific organelles. The novel vacuolar protein (VP24) has been characterized in anthocyanin-producing sweet potato cells. Physiological function of plastid-localized polyphenol oxidase in the living cells has been demonstrated.
