Scholarships
The amount per month granted in 2003:
Research Students ----- 180,300 yen
International Students of Japanese Language and Culture/Undergraduates ----- 139,200 yen
Scholarships are paid direct into the recipients' bank accounts. Please open an account at Shinshu Daigakumae Branch of Hachijuni Bank.
Return Travel Expenses
Japanese government scholarship students who meet any one of the following qualifications, are provided with economy class airline tickets that cover the fare between New Tokyo International (Narita) Airport and the national airport nearest to the recipients' home.
Those who have completed the scholarship-funded period and graduated in the undergraduate programs
Students of Japanese language and culture who have completed the scholarship-funded period and their study programs
Research students who have completed the scholarship-funded period and their research
Students who have been permitted by the head of the Higher Education Bureau to return to their home country because of illness, etc.
Return travel expenses are not paid to the undergraduate students who are accepted as research students after the graduation (except in case 4 above).
Also note no return travel expenses are paid, if
you return to your home country because of personal reasons during the scholarship-funded period.
you continue to stay in Japan as a privately-funded student after the completion of the scholarship-funded period.
you do not return to your home country by the end of the expiration month of scholarship (March, September).
Stamping for Leaving Japan and Return of the Certificate of Alien Registration
When leaving Japan, you must obtain a seal for embarkation and return the Certificate of Alien Registration to the immigration inspector at the (air) port.
Housing Insurance Policies and Guarantors for Private Housing
The housing insurance policies cover damages to private housing caused by fire, explosion, wind, snow, burglary, etc. Foreign students are strongly recommended to purchase the insurance policies to facilitate the process of finding guarantors for their private housing.
Extension of Period for Receiving Scholarships
Japanese government-funded foreign students who are completing the scholarship-funded period can apply for an extension of the period for receiving scholarships. You can apply for an extension through your faculty approximately 3 months prior to the month of expiration of your scholarship.
Certificate of Guarantee (Hosho Shomeisho)
This certificate is issued by the university and guarantees the scholarship student payment of his scholarship as well as evidence of student status. This certificate is necessary when Japanese government scholarship students apply for an extension of the period of stay in Japan. You can apply for this certificate at the Educational Section (Gakumu-gakari) of each Faculty one month before needed.
