Overview of the University




Shinshu University was established in May, 1949 along with the national reform of the school system, incorporating Matsumoto High School, Nagano Normal School and Nagano Youth's Normal School, Matsumoto Technical School of Medicine and Matsumoto Medical College, Nagano Technical College, Nagano Prefectural College of Agriculture and Science, Faculty of Education, School of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Textile Science and Technology.

Later in 1966 the Faculty of Arts and Science was reorganized into the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts was also founded. In 1978 the Faculty of Economics was added. The Research Center for Education Programs(Center for General Education) was founded through abolitioning the Faculty of Liberal Arts in 1995. In 2003 the Center for General Education was reorganized into the Center for Higher Educational Programs.

The university consists of eight faculties or gakubu (Arts,Education, Economics, Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, and Textile Science and Technology), the Center for Higher Education Programs, and six Graduate Schools(Medicine, Arts, Industrial Social Studies, Agriculture, Education, and Science and Technology). There are also affiliated institutions: the University Library, Center for Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Information Processing Center, Cooperative Research Center, Reseach Center for Human and Environmental Sciences, Research and Education Center for Inlandwater Environment, International Student Center; elementary schools, junior high schools, school for the mentally handicapped, kindergarten, the Institute of Nature Education in Shiga Heights and the Center for Educational Practice, affiliated with the Faculty of Education; University Hospital, the Research center on Aging and Adaptation and Institute of Animal Experiments, affiliated with the School of Medicine; Research Farms, Research Forests and the Institute for Highland and Cool Zone Agriculture, affiliated with the Faculty of Agriculture; Experimental Farms and the Institute of High Polymer Research, affiliated with the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology.
