They examined lives of 40 years ago, considered the relevance to life today, and used their imaginations to reect on and envisage a future 40 years hence.Future visions were generally positive with most seeing society as proceeding in a linear fashion, progressively tackling and overcoming the major threats to its survival. Both courses expressed some regret at the loss of the closer and more cooperative community of 40 years ago; replaced by today’s individualistic and non-cooperative competitive society (loss of social capital). Closeness to nature, the weather and seasons has also been lost and the former environment was seen as having reduced stress relative to today’s synthetic environment. In terms of aspects of the past which could be transferred to the present, examples included 57
