A primary challenge in the programs is a need to provide motivation, knowledge and personal skills. My contribution to these challenges was to develop and deliver 2 of the core courses-one in sustainability foundations and one on its relationship to business (for other courses; see Shinshu University, 2011). The basic objectives of these two courses are shown in Table 2, which also indicates the main dierences between the Shinshu and Tohoku teaching modules (Norton et al., 2014).51
